The Heartland

The Heartland

I just listed a house in Marble Rock, IOWA. Although, calling it “just a house” doesn’t really do it justice. It sits on more than two acres in the middle of America’s heartland, completely surrounded by the beautiful fields of Iowa.

Driving there from Mason City was one of my favorite parts of the day. You get to experience Iowa’s countryside the way it was meant to be seen. Rolling fields, country roads, wide-open skies, and a peacefulness that’s becoming harder to find.

I’ve always loved being on farms and acreages. There’s something special about simply standing outside and listening. The birds singing, the wind moving through the trees, and that fresh country air create a sense of peace that’s hard to describe. It’s one of the many things I love about Iowa. Outside of our larger cities like Des Moines or Cedar Rapids, we aren’t surrounded by concrete. Instead, we’re surrounded by the beauty of the land that has made our state what it is.

As I walked through this property, I couldn’t help but imagine what it would have been like to raise my own kids on an acreage like this. A huge kitchen where family and friends gather around the table. Four bedrooms so everyone has their own space. A three-stall garage with room for vehicles, hobbies, and all the toys. And let’s not forget the mudroom – I don’t think you can ever appreciate a good mudroom enough!

Then there are all the possibilities outside. Chickens would have been a must. A few barn cats roaming around. Maybe even a couple of other farm animals. Most of all, there would have been endless adventures for children with room to run, explore, and simply be kids.

I’m always a little surprised when I meet someone who has never spent time on a farm. Here in North Iowa, it’s such an easy experience to have that I sometimes take it for granted. Living here reminds me every day just how fortunate we are.

If you’d like to see this beautiful property for yourself, it’s located at 1437 270th Street, Marble Rock, Iowa. It’s a wonderful home in an equally wonderful community.

And that brings me to one last thought. Marble Rock is such a charming little town. My husband and I recently spent a few days exploring the Villages of Van Buren (SE Iowa), and we absolutely loved it. It reminded me that I need to spend more time visiting Iowa’s small towns. They each have their own personality, history, and sense of community.

Those small towns still capture so much of what makes America special. Neighbors know one another. People wave as you drive by. Life moves at a pace that allows you to appreciate the simple things.

Sometimes the best places aren’t found in big cities – they’re waiting for you down a quiet country road.
