When One Chapter Ends, Another One Begins — And Sometimes It’s a New Place to Call Home
Yesterday I wrote about the next chapter in life.
And usually when one chapter ends, a new one begins.
Sometimes that new chapter involves a new job, a new adventure, more time with family, or simply figuring out what you want life to look like now. And sometimes, that new chapter involves where you live.
Maybe it’s time to sell the home where you raised your children. Maybe you’re ready to buy something different. Maybe you want more space. Maybe you want less. Or maybe you’re at a point in life where a second home starts to sound like a really good idea.
One of the things I’ve noticed in real estate over the past 20 years is how much the idea of “downsizing” has changed.
It used to be that when the kids moved out, empty nesters would naturally start thinking about downsizing. They would sell the big family home and move into something smaller – perhaps a condo or a home that was easier to maintain.
But that isn’t necessarily the case anymore.
I’m seeing more and more people choosing to stay in their larger family homes. And the reason is pretty simple: They want their kids to come home. They want their spouses, grandchildren, siblings and extended family to have a place to gather. They want bedrooms for everyone, a big kitchen, a backyard and a place where everyone can spend time together.
They aren’t looking at that extra space as something they no longer need. They’re looking at it as a place where their family can continue to make memories. And another interesting change I’ve seen is the rise of a second home.
People are buying homes in vacation destinations for their families to enjoy – sometimes together, sometimes individually. A place where someone can escape for a weekend, where the kids can bring their friends, where the whole family can gather for a week in the summer, or simply somewhere to go when you need a little rest and relaxation.
And we are incredibly fortunate to have that opportunity right here in our own backyard. Clear Lake.
Clear Lake real estate has changed dramatically over the past decade. Lakefront property values have increased exponentially, and the demand for properties on and around the lake continues to grow. Less than 10 years ago, it was rare to see a property sell for more than $1 million. Today, million-dollar lake properties are no longer unusual at all.
And honestly, I understand why. There is just something about the lake vibe.
It can be peaceful and quiet. It can be active and full of energy. It can be a place to relax with a cup of coffee while watching the water, or a place to spend the day boating, swimming and entertaining friends. It can be whatever you need it to be.
Right now, I have a condo listed in Ventura on the lake that I think is a perfect example of this changing idea of what a “second home” can look like.
It’s a two-bedroom, two-bath condo with a garage, lake access and its own dock slip. It has two huge sliding glass doors that provide an incredible view of the lake, along with a large deck that is practically made for sitting outside and enjoying the scenery.
And the possibilities are endless.
It could be a place for the whole family to enjoy together. It could be a weekend getaway for one person who simply needs a little peace and quiet. It could be a place where family members take turns spending a week. Or it could be the place everyone gathers during the summer. It really is a multi-use kind of property.
And maybe that’s what I love most about real estate. It isn’t always about buying or selling a house. Sometimes, it’s about creating a place for the next chapter. A place to gather. A place to escape. A place to celebrate. A place to make memories. And sometimes, you don’t have to travel very far to find it. We are pretty lucky to have Clear Lake and Ventura right here in our own backyard.
