If You Don’t Like the Weather… Just Wait a Minute

There’s a sign I once saw outside a local business that has always stuck with me:

“Welcome to Iowa… if you don’t like the weather, wait a minute, it will change”

And honestly? It couldn’t be more true.

Just this week alone, we’ve experienced a little bit of everything. Monday brought blizzard conditions and school cancellations. Yesterday, my kids were out enjoying the snow and even got a little skiing in. And today? We’re soaking up sunshine in the 60s… with temperatures possibly reaching 80° tomorrow.

Only in the Midwest.

Now, I’ll be the first to admit – this time of year isn’t always the prettiest. The snow melts, everything feels a bit muddy and messy, and you start to notice the sand in the gutters and along the sidewalks. It’s that in-between season where winter hasn’t fully let go, and spring is still finding its footing.

But here’s the thing…

This is actually one of my favorite times to show homes.

Why? Because spring tells the truth.

When the snow melts or the rain starts falling, a home can’t hide its secrets. You get to see how water moves across the property – where it pools in the yard, how it drains off the patio/driveway/cement, and whether it’s trying to make its way inside.

It’s also when we learn a lot about the home itself:

Does the basement stay dry?

Is the roof holding up under the change in weather?

Is the sump pump doing its job?

These aren’t always things you notice on a perfect, sunny day – but they matter. A lot.

Sometimes showing homes this time of year means pulling on rain boots and grabbing a jacket instead of sunglasses. It may not be picture-perfect… but it’s real. And in real estate, that honesty is incredibly valuable.

Of course, spring also brings its beauty. There’s a sense of new beginnings, of growth, and of what’s to come. It’s a reminder that warmer days, green lawns, lake days and summer evenings are just around the corner.

And if you’re thinking about buying a home, this season might just give you the clearest picture of what you’re really getting.

Because in Iowa… the weather may change in a minute—but we all want a good investment to stand the test of time.
