Progress Isn’t Always Pretty

Progress Isn’t Always Pretty

 🚧

If you’ve driven around town lately, you’ve probably hit a few orange cones… or a detour… or maybe even a moment of frustration.

It’s that time of year in Iowa; when the snow melts, the flaws show, and suddenly potholes, cracks, and uneven roads seem to appear everywhere. And while we’re quick to notice (and complain about) the condition of our streets, it’s funny how quickly the complaints shift when construction begins to fix them.

Road closed?

Traffic backed up?

“Inconvenient.”

But what if we looked at it differently?

One of my favorite stories comes from a developer who has invested heavily in communities like ours. He once shared that when he visits a town, one of the most encouraging signs he looks for is road construction.

Why?

Because to him, construction means progress.

It means the city is investing in itself.

It shows care, maintenance, and forward movement.

And most importantly, it signals that this is a place worth investing in.

That perspective stuck with me.

Because yes, road construction can be frustrating. It slows us down, reroutes our routines, and tests our patience. But the alternative? Ignoring the problem and letting things continue to deteriorate.

And this doesn’t just apply to roads.

In life, the same is often true. The things that are broken, whether in our homes, our businesses, or even within ourselves, don’t magically improve without disruption. Fixing them usually requires time, effort… and yes, sometimes a bit of a mess.

Growth isn’t always smooth.

Progress isn’t always convenient.

But the outcome is worth it.

So the next time you hit a detour or see a construction sign, take a second to reframe it:

This isn’t just an inconvenience, it’s a sign of investment.

It’s a sign of care.

It’s a sign that better things are coming.

And that’s something worth being patient for.
